Public Education

The Will County 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System is committed to educating the public on the purpose and proper use of 9-1-1, as well as the technical differences among various communication methods, including wireline, wireless, and VoIP services.

The Public Education Program collaborates closely with the county’s three Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), the 9-1-1 National Public Educators Forum, and the NENA Education Committee to develop and promote clear, consistent messaging about 9-1-1 services and usage.

What We Do

Will County 9-1-1 Public Education:

  • Provides educational materials to 9-1-1 centers, police and fire departments, and the general public. Materials are carefully designed, evaluated, and distributed to support ongoing outreach efforts throughout the year.
  • Assists in the development, coordination, and scheduling of programs that promote the appropriate use of the 9-1-1 emergency system.
  • Contributes to the creation of public education messaging related to 9-1-1 services.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to present to schools, neighborhood watch groups, civic organizations, and other community groups.
  • Maintains strong, positive relationships with local media partners to help amplify public safety messaging.

Cell Phone Sally

To engage younger audiences, Will County 9-1-1 Public Educators utilize “Cell Phone Sally,” a child-friendly mascot and educational program. Each year, educators visit schools throughout the county to present the Cell Phone Sally program to students.

In addition to reaching young children, the program also provides education for older students, adults, senior citizens, and individuals who are hearing impaired.
